Lennar and South Star Donate Home to Retired Veteran
On Monday, April 23, 2018 Retired Army SFC Jose Sierra Jr. and his wife were totally surprised when they came to what they thought to be an interview regarding the home they had applied for but were instead escorted by members of the Patriot Guard riders to a building site in Mission Del Lago (947 Hagen Way, San Antonio, 78221) which they learned would eventually hold their new, mortgage-free home. This was all made possible through the combined efforts of Operation FINALLY HOME. Builder Lennar Homes and Community Owners SouthStar Communities were proud to make this donation for what they considered an exceptionally worthy cause.
SFC Sierra had attended high school in San Antonio at Joseph F Kennedy and after graduation joined the United States Army. He served four combat tours during his 21-year career: Bosnia in 1996, Kuwait in 1999, and Iraq in 2003 and 2007. It was during the Iraq tour that SFC Sierra was wounded when serving as part of the crew on patrol in a tank which ran over an Improvised Explosive Device and was ejected and lost consciousness. Because, upon waking, he was able to walk and talk he was assigned to another tank patrol crew. Upon returning stateside SFC Sierra experienced neck, back, and wrist pain and was diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Jose and Maria had attended high school together and were married in 2012. Between them, they have six children and five grandchildren and Maria is Jose’s caregiver.
Established in 2005 by founder, Dan Wallrath, a builder of homes in Texas for 30 years, Operation FINALLY HOME is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization whose purpose is to honor those who have worn the military uniform and sacrificed so much to defend our freedoms and values by providing, in some cases, home modifications, but mostly custom-built, mortgage-free homes to America’s heroes or to the widows of those of those who have fallen. To date Operation FINALLY HOME has more than 250 projects either completed or in planning stages in 33 states and they realize there is much more to be done.
The aim of Operation FINALLY HOME is to finish each project at no cost, accomplished partially by covering some of those costs from the monies raised or contributed for that particular project. Each of their builds is unique as every builder may work differently with the homeowner and his subcontractors, suppliers, and other partners and have their preferred processes that are necessary to successfully build a custom home. Lennar Homes graciously agreed to be the participating builder for this project and the build is now underway. The home was framed by late June and all of the Lennar employees were invited to write their thoughts and congratulations to the Sierra family either directly on the wall area between the studs or on paper hearts attached to the studs themselves.
In addition to this project, Lennar Homes is currently building other homes in the South Side community of Mission Del Lago, an 800-acre master-planned, golf community. The community of Mission Del Lago was established by SouthStar Mission Del Lago Developer, LLC., a part of SouthStar Development Partners, Inc., a family of companies founded in 1999 by J. Larry Rutherford, which has master-planned, acquired, developed, and managed over 30,000 acres and 20,000 lots in more than 20 different communities, primarily across the Southern states. SouthStar Mission Del Lago, like Operation FINALLY HOME and Lennar Homes, was delighted to be able to be a participant in this most heartwarming project. We all wish you well Jose and Maria!
